Today’s post is about one of my favorite rolls, the Long Island Roll.  Originally called the Bubba Roll, as in Bubba Gump Shrimp, because it was loaded with shrimp.  Due to confusion of the word Bubba, my Auntie help me give a new name, the Long Island Roll, because it looked extremely long when plated.

The Long Island Roll contains cooked shrimp and shrimp tempura.  Shrimpilicious!  Mmm.  Add some cream cheese, scallions, and AVOCADOS!  Sweet Unagi sauce and splashes of toasted black and white sesame seeds over the top.  Nom! … I’ve been using that word a lot. :)

You will need some:

  • Sushi Rice
  • 1/2 sheet of nori
  • toasted sesame seeds
  • 2 shrimp tempuras
  • 2 whole cooked shrimps
  • 1/8 of an avocado
  • cream cheese
  • 1 green onion
  • unagi sauce

The Long Island Roll:

First, spread the rice on the nori.  Sprinkle the sesame seeds. Be generous!  It will give your sushi a more woody toasty aroma.

Flip it.  Apply your ingredients.  Across the middle place the shrimp tempuras, cream cheese, and green onion.

Roll it.  Close it.  Pat the sides in.  Perfect.

Now if you bought cooked shrimp.  Cut them symmetrical halves, the long way, from head to tail.   Rip each slightly  from left to right to straighten them out.

If you are cooking the shrimp.  Boil them with a wooden skewer from head of body to tail.  This will keep the shrimps straight while being cooked.

Now slice your avocado into 8 thin pieces.

Layer the shrimp and avocados on top of your sushi roll.  I like it do it: 1 avo, 1 shrimp, 2 avo, 1 shrimp, 2 avo, 1 shrimp, 1 avo.  As long as you cover any showing rice on top.

Plastic wrap the entire roll and use a bamboo rolling mat to mesh the two.  Cut into 8 or 9 pieces.  9 pieces makes it easier to eat since its kind of a big roll.

Cover with the bamboo rolling mat and lightly press to mold it to a perfect shape once more.  Remove the plastic wrap and place the pieces onto a presentable plate.

Use Unagi sauce to cover the top of the roll and an additional 3/4 inch radius of the surface of the plate.  You don’t wanna over sweeten the roll.  So more sauce on the plate will cater to those who prefer a bit more to hit the spot.

Splash black and white toasted sesame seeds over the top of the roll and plate.

Ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce is unnecessary, but go ahead if you must.

Read it.  Feed it.  Eat it.  Sushivids.  Enjoy!
