LETS BEGIN MAKING SUSHI!
Step by Step Guide for Beginners: How To Make Sushi
You will need: Sushi Rice, 1/2 sheet of Seaweed ( Nori ), Toasted Sesame Seeds, Rolling Bamboo Mat, Knife, Cutting Board a Presentable Plate, and Sushi Ingredients that you prefer.
How to make sushi : Step 1 – Applying the Rice onto the Seaweed
Start off with a palm of sushi rice in your right hand. Look at it. Estimate about 3.5 inches by2 inches in diameter of an oval shaped sushi rice ball. If you think its too much, take some off. If you think its too less, add some on. You will learn through repetition. More reason to make more sushi.
Place the sushi rice ball in the center on the left hand side of a 1/2 sheet of nori (seaweed). Use your right hand to squeeze the bottom of the rice up while your left hand is pushing forward and downward to move the rice equally across the nori.
Next step is the spreading the top part of the nori. Using your thumbs and index fingers, start from the left handed center of the rice and push towards the left top corner of the nori. The thumbs are the pushers and the index fingers act as a border line so you do not push the rice surpass the nori. Do not push the rice down, push the rice forward. Making sushi is delicate, it does not involve using force. Do this while you move toward the right end to cover the entire top part of the nori.
On to the bottom. Basically you do the same thing as the previous step for the top part but for the bottom you use all your fingers. Oppositely, your thumbs are now the border liners and the rest of the fingers are used to pull the rice down toward the left corner and across to the right corner to cover the entire bottom.
Your sushi rice patty should be fully covered by now. If you see spots of nori through missing spots of rice then either push rice over it or grab some more rice and fill the holes in. Your rice patty should look something like this. It could be cleaner but that’s fine. You don’t have to make it perfect. Just make sure the left and right sides and corners are fully covered due to the fact that these are the most important parts of spreading rice onto the nori. If rice if left out on the sides and corners then after rolling the roll, the edges will look small, sloppy, and maybe even not stand up properly when your done.
How to make sushi : Step 2 -Placing Your Ingredients
Part 9 – Sprinkle sesame seeds on top of the rice but Optional for those who are allergic.
Place the patty on a wrapped sushi mat, rice side facing down. Leave about a cm of space between the bottom of the sushi mat and the bottom of the rice patty. This space will help ease your rolling process up ahead. Place the ingredients across the middle of the seaweed. Place ingredients that contain more water closer to the middle and the dryer ingredients around it. Placing wet ingredients closer to the edges my prevent the roll from closing.
How to make sushi : Step 3 – Closing and Rolling Your Sushi
Now lets roll. Place your thumbs under the bottom end of the bamboo mat. Pick it up and slide it over the roll. The rice patty and ingredients should roll with the bamboo mat. After pulling the bamboo mat over to top, press the edge down onto the nori of the rice patty. The ingredients should be completely covered by the rice patty and the rice patty should be covered by the bamboo mat. The end of the bamboo mat and the end of the rice patty should touch the nori at the same time, aligned. This is the beginning of closing the roll.
Next, push or tug the bamboo mat inward to push all the ingredients inside of the rice patty, leaving no ingredients exposed. Flap the sushi mat upwards and pull it forward so the sushi roll has moved 90 degrees forward. Mold and press the sides of the roll. Not too hard though, just a bit of firmness will do the trick. Flap it back once and repeat. You can do this a few times if you feel like your roll is not tight or molded correctly.
When you’re finished, place the bamboo mat over the roll. Use the bamboo mat and your palms to press and mold the edges tighter. Do this by leaving a small part of the edge exposed from the bamboo mat and tapping it tight with your palm. Not doing this might result in the ingredients falling out or not being able to stand up right when your finished. Lopsided sushi.
How to make sushi : Step 4 – Additional Add-Ons
Almost done! Now if you have any other items to place on top of the roll now is the time. It can be from fish eggs to avocados to more fish. Almost anything can be placed on top of a sushi roll.
How to make sushi : Step 5 – Cutting Your Sushi Roll
Now its time to cut. Hold the sides of the roll with your thumb and middle finger and use your index finger to rest on top of the roll making an ark shape. Place your knife under the ark you’ve created and cut down the middle. Placing your fingers like this holds the roll in place while you cut it. Next, place one half directly in front of the other half. Now make an ark with your left thumb, index, middle and ring finger. Thumb and ring finger to the left, index and middle finger to the right. Place your knife under the ark again and cut directly down the middle. Repeat the previous step to the left side and right side to end up with 8 symmetrical pieces of sushi.
How to make sushi : Step 6 – Your Sushi Presentation
Now arrange the sushi onto a presentable plate. Each piece of sushi should be set diagonally and aligned across the plate horizontally. Garnish with ginger and wasabi. Serve and Enjoy!
I know this was a long post but it was simple right? Now that you know how to properly roll a sushi roll, you can make any type of roll you want!

TY very much for taking the time to share these vids! I have accomplished my first inside-out California roll last evening (a bit messy but had a ball). I am in love with me new found skills. Will acquire precision in repetition. How long have you been making sushi professionally? Maki-Zen

Wow. Do you eat it all after? I am so jealous. So I can get this at a regular Asian store? I live in a small town and things like rice oil and snow crab meat are hard to come by.

theres a couple of things you can do, one is keep a bowl of water next to do, and dip both hands into the water clap the excess water out and grab your rice to spread it. if it starts to stick again use more water. at first it might be a hassle but it’ll be easy to get use to. second the easy way for making sushi at home would be to buy latex free gloves. dab a little bit of oil on them and rub your hands together and wah lah no more sticking rice.
